Best Cat Food for Siamese Cats

If you grew up with Disney movies, then you’re probably familiar with the two mischievous Siamese cats that appear in Lady and the Tramp. I mean come on, tell me you’ve never had THIS stuck in your mind, “We are Siamese if you pleeeaase..

Siamese cats are one of the most famous breeds of cats, among others (such as the big Maine Coon). The Siamese are specifically noted as being the most intelligent and vocal breed of cats, too, making them consistently intriguing, elegant characters with super fun personalities. {I once had a Siamese cat named Max who is unforgettable.  His personality could fill a room and as he aged he became the best cuddle buddy anyone could ever ask for.  Therefore, as you could probably guess, the Siamese is one of my favorite breed of cats.}

The Siamese in a nutshell

  • Weight: 6-10+ pounds
  • Life expectancy: 14-20 years
  • Coat: Short-hair, grooming is easy
  • Character: Intelligent, sociable, very talkative, affectionate, loyal, cuddly, close to owner(s)
  • Health problems: General good health but the most common health problem is obesity

History

Since my first cat was a Siamese, I could definitely guarantee that having a Siamese is one of the best companions for the first time cat owner. The history of the Siamese dates back several centuries.  As featured on Cat Time:

“Cats with light-colored coats set off with black mask, ears, paws and tail have been known in Thailand (formerly Siam) for centuries. Ancient manuscripts depict the cats, but they were not seen in the West until the late nineteenth century, when they were exhibited at the Crystal Palace Cat Show in London. Not everyone appreciated their unusual appearance, but they quickly became fashionable pets. By the turn of the century, if not earlier, they were popular in the United States as well.”

And they remain very popular today as well!

There are actually two types of well-known Siamese cats: modern (show) and traditional.  What you feed your Siamese will vary slightly depending upon which Siamese you have (due to physical differences).

The “modern” Siamese cats mirror more of an Oriental physique: long legs, slender body, triangular face, long pointy ears.  Whereas the “traditional” Siamese cats have more of a round head with a slightly heavier or “chunky” body type.  {This was definitely the type of Siamese I had when I was young.  Max got so fat weighing a good 15+ pounds which is above average.  Although yes I see now that I overfed him and thus he was overweight, but how was I supposed to know the facts about proper cat nutrition? I was just a kid after all}.

Common health problems

Some common health problems identifiable with the modern (traditional) Siamese cats are: obesity, respiratory (asthma) and dental problems.

Other problems that are common with the “show” or more Oriental-looking Siamese cats are: crossed eyes, other eye problems (glaucoma), heart issues, bladder stones, and certain types of cancer (Mastocytoma).

It is thus important to provide food that is adapted for your Siamese cat.  Just because your cat may fall under the “Siamese” breed, this does not mean to say that two Siamese cats will be benefited by eating the same diet.  In fact, just like humans, cats vary even within their breed.  This principle extends to potential health problems that Siamese cats can have.  For example, humans are of the same “breed” yet we all do not share the same health problems or eat the same food, you see? 🙂

The best cat food for Siamese cats: A closer look

It is essential to understand that all cats, even from the same breed are different. While our recommendation will work for the majority, some Siamese cats might be pickier than others. When you think about it, it’s kind of the same for us humans! Taste is a really personal thing even for cats, that’s why you might have to try several brands before finding the hidden gem. We do believe our selection will greatly help you as it did for thousands of Siamese owners.

Blue Buffalo Indoor Health Life Protection

Best cat food for Siamese cats

See on Amazon

Simply the best choice out there for your purrecious Siamese cat! We first heard of this brand through Brittany’s sister. She was using it for her dogs but said it was also available for cats. She highly recommended it and we understand why! It’s only full of goodness!

The main ingredient is REAL meat (Chicken here, but you can find different flavors: salmon, duck…)!  This food has super high protein content which is essential for your beast and there is absolutely no meat by-products!

It is a grain free meal, which is also awesome compared to most supermarket brands who use grain as a filler (cats cannot digest most grains properly).

What’s more, the food is also made with a blend of essential vitaminsminerals and antioxidants. It contains fruits and vegetables for a well balanced diet as well as live fermentation product, which help support natural digestion.

Lastly, this “Indoor” selection of Blue Buffalo includes “LifeSource Bits” which enhances the cat food with 7 super antioxidant-rich ingredients: apples, blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, pomegranate, pumpkin and spinach.

Also available on Amazon, which are the best options for your Siamese is Blue Buffalo Healthy Living (highlights immune system, healthy heart and eyes) or another great option for your food-loving cat is the Blue Buffalo Weight Management (highlights of course weight management, digestive health).  Since the most common health problem in Siamese cats is obeisity, I would recommend either one of these three choices.  Click on the image above left, you will then see all of the available cat food options and flavors (weight management, sensitive stomach, chicken, salmon, indoor, etc.)

To put it simply, the Blue Buffalo brand provides a superior nutrition for your Siamese while providing him with the essential supplements related to this breed’s specifications.

Nutro Max Cat

Another option to feed your Siamese is “Nutro Max Cat”, also highly recommended on Amazon. This product differs to our first option mainly due to it’s first several ingredients but nonetheless still presents a healthy alternative.

Chicken meal is the first ingredient which is why we rank this food a bit less than the Blue Buffalo brand (where real meat is the first ingredient and chicken or salmon meal as the second ingredient). It is grain free as well, highly digestible, it contains vegetables and fruits which will bring him the natural antioxidants he needs. It contains vitamin D supplements for healthy bones.

It is a little bit less breed specific but it does the job of feeding your Siamese with great flavor and benefits.

OR…Make your own food!

If you have some time, the best solution can be to make your own homemade cat food for your Siamese. This might take some more time but in the end, you will know for sure what you are feeding your Siamese cat(s) and you can be sure it will be a healthier (more transparent) option than any so called premium brand.

Why not contact your local veterinarian for an expert and safe recommendation. There are other factors that should be taken into account, like how much crude fat is included. Antioxidants are great for humans, but what are the ones included in cat food? Will those ingredients work as antioxidants for cats, or is it just extra ingredients being used to jump on the antioxidant movement with us humans. What about the fruits and vegetables? IMO, that is just marketing to raise the food price. Just wondering when have you ever seen a cat eat a vegetable or fruit? I just worry that with so many followers who obviously respect your recommendations, that you're able to add the credit of sharing sought after medical advice. I like your blog. Keep up the good work.

CAT HOUSEZ

Sunday 10th of March 2019

I confess that I have yet to get an answer to my enquiries about this name. However, a bit of rational and logical thought leads me to this conclusion. This cat is a dwarf cat which is short of stature. Napolean Bonaparte (the French general during the French Revolution) was short of stature by the standards of today (5 feet 6 inches). Also most of the napoleons that I have seen are white and Napoleaon Bonaparte rode a white horse (is there a connection there?). There probably is no connection there and the name simply originated from the short stocky compact profile of this dwarf cat which mirrored Napolean Bonaparte.
