Morphology: Brachycephalic face (flat and round face), short and sturdy legs.

Coat: Silky and fine. Long, luxurious coat, with a dense undercoat (daily care required)

Health problems: Hairballs, Polycystic kidney disease (40% of them), corneal sequestrum, Sensitive respiratory system, fleas (hard to get rid of with that long hair).

With Persians having so many potential illnesses, it’s especially important to feed them food fit for a (lion) king. A healthy cat starts with their diet, so make sure to invest in a high-quality cat food.

Our In-depth Review: The Best Cat Food for Persians = Blue Buffalo

You probably noticed that a Persian takes more time to eat than other cats. One of the reasons is that they use the bottom of their tongue to grab their food. We believe that the shape of the kibble does not change a thing, they just need to take their time to absorb their food (Royal Canin’s kibble shape is just a marketing technique to get you to buy their stuff).

Persians do eat a lot, they just do so slowly. It is common for Persians to get a bit chubby as they age. It is then very important to carefully monitor their weight.

They need the perfect combination of nutrients to support their long thick coat. It is also very important that the food you select contributes to combat against hairballs. With such luxurious fur, Persians tend to ingest a lot more hair than any other cats.

Two important criteria are important to take into account for your Persian:

  • Hairball control
  • Weight management

And we have found that those two criteria are exactly what Blue Buffalo provides in their Indoor Hairball & Weight Management recipe. Not only this, but this unique food comes with all the essentials required by your feline friend:

  • Real meat as the first ingredient: this unique cat food provides all the proteins required by your beast

  • No grains, no by-products, no gluten: cheap grain is used as a filler in most commercial brands but Blue Buffalo focuses on what matters and leaves the rest aside. Their formula works wonders for kitties with allergies or sensitivities.

  • Blend of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants: just what your beast needs!

Though Blue Buffalo’s line of cat food is our personal recommendation, there are two other foods that will seriously satisfy Persian cats as well. They are Taste of the Wild and Purina Beyond Simply. Both are packed with protein and nutrients, leaving all of the good stuff in and the bad stuff out.

What About Wet Cat Food for Persians?

Yes, you are right, a proper diet should mix both dry and wet cat food. Everything is explained here in our very thorough guide. If you want to treat your cat with what’s best we suggest the best feline canned cat food.

Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild also offer their delicious recipes in wet cat food version, but here is another wet cat food made only with natural ingredients. How About Homemade Meals?

If you want what’s best for your Persian, the best way is simply to make his food with fresh ingredients carefully selected. It takes more time but it’s definitely worth the extra effort.

We do not always have time to do so but we do cook often for our Yoda, and he LOVES IT! Every cat owner we know who transitioned to the raw diet saw an outstanding difference in the look of their cat. Check out how to do it here.

Final Thoughts: The Best Cat Food for Your Persian Cat

In addition to feeding your Persian right, do not forget to provide him with a fresh bowl of water at all times, especially if his main diet consists essentially of dry kibble.

Do not overfeed your Persian as it may result in serious health problems in the long run. I know it’s tempting to give him what he loves but it is very important to train him at a young age not to eat too much. You will save his life!

Thanks a lot for following us on Fluffy Kitty, please let us know what you think and what you feed your Persian.

Hi :) I was just reading your column. I adopted a new part of my mini family few days back. He was an abandoned cat and saw him when i took my Other Persian cat for grooming in this Pet Grooming Shop. Then instantly i decided to adopt the other little guy. When i took him, the groomers gave me free food that he was currently eating.

It is Taste of The Wild.

Currently my other persian cat was eating Royal Canin Persian Adult and for the past few weeks ive been observing him that he is not eating as much as before.

Now, when both of them are at the house i have 2 different foods for each of them and suddenly my other cat likes to eat TOTW.

My only concern is that he had a past medical problem in which he did have crystals in his urine. I am afraid if he will continue eating TOTW it will go back ? or is it fine?

Because his Royal Canin food just finished and i was wondering which to buy this time. Is TOTW safe for his condition'?

Thanks in advance <3 Loved your article!

Hi Alyssa! Thanks very much for reaching out and sharing your story. How awesome you adopted this little guy! As for TOTW, we can say it is a high-quality cat food that shouldn't give your Persian any problems. Was your vet the one who recommended Royal Canin during your Persian's treatment? Crystals in cat urine can happen to any cat - I am not aware of Persians being overexposed to this risk - but in any case, crystals can be prevented by ensuring your cat is hydrated properly! Many cats suffer from UTIs and crystals because of lack of hydration due to a dry kibble-only diet. You can, of course, feed your Persian TOTW but I would recommend providing a half dry-half wet diet with TOTW, (they provide their recipes in wet food version as well). Also, investing in a cat water fountain will help prevent any future crystals in the urine as a result of dehydration (cat fountains are shown to entice cats to drink more water by something like 30%, which is a lot!!). One last thing - like with any food/diet changes, make sure to transition from the old food to the new food slowly (across one week at least) to avoid any stomach upset. I hope this helps! If you have doubts or see any changes in your cat's eating behavior, please ask your vet because I can only analyze your cat's situation so much - your vet will be able to advise you better if you're really unsure! Thanks Alyssa and good luck! xo, Bri

I have been looking at new cats to buy since my last one passed. I miss having someone around to keep me company at my apartment. Persian cats are really intriguing to me because of their beauty and rarity. If i decide to go with this breed, I will be sure and get the correct food with real meat like you mentioned.

Hi Kenneth! Persians are indeed wonderful cats! Have you looked at rescue centers or shelters for Persians? Lots of people underestimate the amount of care it takes to keep their fur groomed and their diet on par, etc. It's so important to feed our felines a wholesome diet--with real ingredients! Thanks for dropping by! We hope you find comfort in finding a new fluffy kitty soon.

My Persian needs to put on weight as he was found in tge road starving. Is it best to give him grain free dry food?

Brittany, Paul, and Yoda =^^=

Yes, we would recommend providing grain-free kitten food (as it tends to have higher levels of fat and protein). You should also offer your Persian canned mackerel or sardines. Other good sources of healthy proteins include plain yogurt, or scrambled eggs (no butter or salt of course). In no time your Persian will gain some extra fluff! Thanks for the great article idea, by the way. :)
